Sister city of Machu Picchu, archaeological site in a very good state of conservation with a walk through the Apurímac canyon.

It is located on the spur of the Salkantay mountain range, more than 3030 meters above sea level, surrounded by the Apus (mountain gods) of Yamana, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasiyo and Panta, on the left bank of the Apurimac River . During the time of the Incas, everything was connected and in communication with Machu Picchu through a complex network of trails.

Choquequirao is considered “The last refuge of the Inca Empire”. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover a complex hydraulic system, most likely for domestic, ceremonial and agricultural use. The geographical location of Choquequirao in reference to other religious centers of the same time tends to indicate that its function was that Inca enclave towards the valleys of the Apurímac River.

ITINERARY

Day 1CUSCO / CHIQUISCA (approx. 17 km, Max. Height 2900 m, approx. 6 h)

Departure from Cusco for a 4 hour drive to the starting point of your hike on the edge of the highland village of Cachora in the Apurimac valley.

Here begins a day of trekking with impressive landscapes, following the path that winds through the valley, you will pass sparkling rivers, dense forests and enjoy the mountain panorama.

At the end of the hike, you will reach the oasis of Chiquisca.

Day 2CHIQUISCA / CHOQUEQUIRAO TREKKING (approx; 14 km, max altitude 3050 m, approx; 6-7 h)

Today is the most demanding day: Trekking on the program through beautiful landscapes You reach the hidden ruins of Choquequirao, also known as the “Cradle of gold”. Only 25% of the citadel is visible, which means there is still a lot to discover there. Enjoy the rest of the day at Raqaypata campsite.

Day 3CHOQUEQUIRAO / COCAMASANA (about 16 km, max altitude 3050 m, about 6-7 hrs)

Hike that will take you downhill to the banks of the Apurimac river.
Along the way, you will discover the enchanting diversity of highland plants such as Bromeliad, orchids or bamboo.
The area is also known for its many known bird species.

Day 4COCAMASANA / CUSCO (approx. 15 km, Max. Height 2900 m, approx 6-7 h)

Take advantage of your last day of trekking You will slowly leave the lush vegetation of Choquequirao for the mountain trails to reach Cachora.

 Upon arrival in Cachora, you will take the return bus to Cusco
